KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
RIPLEY COUNCIL #2374
September 2008
Council NEWSLETTER

CHARITY   UNITY   FRATERNITY   PATRIOTISM
IN SERVICE TO ONE    IN SERVICE TO ALL

Brother Knights,

Our fundraiser as food runners is well under way at the Cincinnati Bengals home games. Our council and All Saints Assembly are  working together at all 10 home games this year with three games down and seven to go. Please check your schedule for your date. We  will carpool to the stadium from St. George Church leaving at 8:30am. As you already know, the Bengals are 0-4 and will have a tough  road ahead. Can they turn this losing streak around? You bet they can!  Go Bengals!

On Thursday, August 28 a 1st degree was held at Wilmington. Brother Knight Dennis Hauke received his first degree. Congratulations  Denny and welcome to the council! If you haven’t been to a first degree lately, and would like to attend, just give me a call. We will be  attending a first degree on Thursday, October 23rd at Wilmington.

On Friday, September 5th a Field Mass was held at the farm of Bill and Cindy McCafferty in Fayetteville. There were ten Sir Knights in full  Regalia on a very rainy evening. Sir Knights in attendance from All Saints Assembly 3091 were FN Bob Young, FC Barry Daulton, FT Albert  Spiller, and myself. Everything went very well, except for the much needed rain.
Our effort in collecting much needed items for the people in Iraq was a success. I have talked to Christine Keller Royer, wife of Major  Jonathan Royer, USAF, to set a date as to when these items will be picked up. Once I comfirm a date I will let you know. Thanks to  everyone for their donations!

WOW! What a Parish Picnic! On Sunday, September 14 our parish picnic was held at the Brown County Rural Water Association Park.  Now, I did pray to God for a rain free day and a gentle breeze to help keep us cool. My prayer was answered, as we received both, but  the breeze was not so gentle. This just goes to show us, prayers are answered, but remember to watch what you pray for! Even with the  Hurricane force winds, we still had a good time with around seventy five people in attendance. The burgers, brats, hot dogs, and  everyone’s covered dish were just great!

The beer mug slide was a very eagerly awaited contest. Participants slide a glass beer mug down an 8 foot table to see who can get the  mug closest to the edge. It was a tight contest, but Nancy Sanders emerged victorious! The grand prize for winning the contest was the  very rare, limited edition K of C Holy Bear. Next up was the water balloon contest. With the strong winds, you would dry out very fast!  Competition was tough, as contestants were very good at catching the balloons early on. But, when the distance grew larger, balloons  started to burst! The final round winners were partners, Bernie Schumacher and Mike Keller. They also received the K of C Holy Bear as  being the champions of the water balloon contest. The last contest was “fill the jar”. This pitted the women against the men in a race to  see who could fill the jar with water. It was a battle that went back and forth until the women finally pulled ahead to win the contest!
Thanks to the Brown County Rural Water Association for the use of their park with very strong shelters. Also thanks to Brother Knights Bill  and Joe Germann for doing the cooking on the charcoal grill, and Brother Knight Bruce Kattine for the PA system. An award was  presented to Bruce by Ripley Council for his continued service as a DJ for our council, St. George & St. Michael Parishes, St. Michael  School, and his community. Thanks Bruce! Also thanks to Brother Knight Rick Eagan for donating a Brown County Quilt Barn coverlet for  our Hospice of Hope raffle. The winner of the coverlet was John Schwierling of Ripley. John and his family lives on Chicken Hollow Road.  Congratulations John, and thanks to Rick for the very generous donation. I am proud to say that our council will be presenting a check to  Hospice of Hope in the amount of $315 at our October council meeting.

On Wednesday, September 17 our council’s blood drive was a big hit with the Hoxworth Blood Center. Their mobile donor bus made  stops at Ripley, and later at Georgetown. This was a big undertaking for our council, but a very successful one. Thanks to all who donated,  or “tried” to donate. I received a report from Hoxworth Donor Recruiter, Gary Woebkenberg that fifty donors showed up, with forty four  donating. These 44 units of blood will help over 125 hospitalized patients! Gary said, “once again, thank you, some of us here at work  were discussing your drive, and we all commented that it was the best community blood drive with a new group, that we’ve had in over  a year!”

Remember membership! Let’s just say if one fourth of our membership, yes, only one fourth, brought in 1 new member each, that would  be thirty new brother knights! Be one of the one fourth, recruit a new member today!
If you have questions about your Knights of Columbus Insurance, or would like to know more about the insurance program, please give  our insurance field agent, Ripley Council’s very own, Brother Knight Dan Verney a call @ 513-876-1001.

If you are a brother knight of the third degree, please consider completing your K of C experience as a knight by joining the fourth  degree. This degree, known as the patriotic degree is available to every third degree member. Our local assembly, All Saints Assembly  3091 meets the first Monday of the month at St. George’s Parish Hall. For more information about the fourth degree contact: Faithful  Navigator Bob Young @ 937-549-8115.

The Ohio State Council 2008 Football Sweepstakes Program is under way. Our council has tickets available at $10 each. The program runs  for the last 10 weeks of the season. A total of $1,000 in cash prizes are awarded weekly. The final ticket turn-in is October 24, so see me at  our next council meeting to buy your tickets.

It was agreed on at our September council meeting that our council would have a float entry in the Brown County Fair Opening Night  Parade. Our theme for the float was “Keep Christ in Christmas” with a live Nativity Scene. Brother Knight Fred Dengler volunteered to  chair the float committee. With the fair fast approaching, our  plans went into action. Sr. Carol Ann recruited students at school for our  live Nativity Scene, our large 16 foot banners were attached to the side of the wagon, All Saints Assembly 3091 provided the color guard,  brother knights carried our council banner, Christmas music was playing, and brother knights passed out candy canes behind the float.  There were many comments along the parade route about our float. Spectators made comments like, yes… that’s right, the best float I’ve  seen, they would repeat aloud the wording on our banners, they would clap their hands, give a thumbs up, and salute the flag.  I believe  we really made a loud statement with our float about keeping Christ in Christmas. I would like to thank everyone who took part in making  our float one of the best! Thanks to: Fr. Jim, Sr. Carol Ann, St. Michael School students Jaynee Black, Eric Stansberry, Will Cooper, Jacob  Rockey, and Houstin Highlander, St. George Parish, Joan St. Clair, St. Michael Parish, Susan Caproni, Maureen Harvey, Kathy Clifton, SK  Fred Dengler, BK Emerson Cahall, BK Roger Clifton, SK Albert Spiller, SK Joe Dahlheimer, BK Bill Lawson, BK Mike Cales and wife Cindy, SK  Mike Keller, SK Ken Stein, and the 4th degree Color Guard consisting of FN Bob Young, FC Barry Daulton, FP Danny Polley, and SK Dan  Verney.

Our council once again worked the Cattlemen’s Beef Booth at the Brown County Fair on Friday, September 26th.  The weather was  unusually warm for this time of year, and the fair experienced a record turnout. This is one of our biggest fundraisers for the year, and it  gives us a chance to work side by side with the youth. We started at 9am and finished just after 11pm for a very long day! Thanks to  Brother Knight Mike Cales for calling volunteers to help “man” the booth. Also thanks to all forty plus volunteers who did their part  working at the beef booth with some working a double shift. Thanks to everyone, as this was truly a team effort!

This Saturday, October 4th,  is the Garden Rosary starting at 9:30am. Please gather at the Rosary Garden beside St. Michael Church in  Ripley. This Rosary Garden was just recently installed with funds coming from a bequest. If you haven’t really admired the beauty of this  Rosary Garden, please make plans to attend on October 4th.  Chairs will be provided if standing is a problem as we pray the Rosary. There  will be refreshments in the hall following the Rosary.

Also this Saturday night is our council’s annual Ladies Night Out. I hope you called and made your reservations, as our seating is now full.  The setting will be the Meranda-Nixon Winery on Laycock Road. You will have your choice of Salmon or Filet of Beef, all the side dishes,  salad, appetizers, fresh baked bread, desserts, and a bottle of wine! This will be a night to remember, and our ladies deserve it! I will bring  our group up to date on council activities, and if someone would want me to tell a joke, I might just have one, right Bryan?
Hospitality Sunday and our Corporate Communion will be at St. George Parish this Sunday, October 5th at the 11am Mass. If you are a Sir  Knight of All Saints Assembly 3091, please wear your tuxedo with the social baldric. All council members please wear a suit or jacket and  tie. Come early so we can all (your family also) be seated together in the main body of church. A Corporate Communion is a great way to  show the parish the unity of our Knights of Columbus organization. Also please bring an item for the Hospitality Sunday Breakfast.  Corporate Communion is a way to show the parish that we are a large K of C family, and that we can also cook! Breakfast casseroles,  cheesy potatoes, donuts, coffee cake, Danish, bagels, fresh fruit, tomatoes, and breads are some suggestions. Bring whatever your  specialty is!  And remember, have that form100 with you at all times!

There will be a Halloween Party held on Friday, October 24 at St. Michael Parish Hall. The party is open to all children of St. Michael  School, and the children of our parishes. Make plans to attend even if you don’t have children attending. There is always a good time  watching the children play games, and seeing their costumes.  Help will be needed in the kitchen to prepare the refreshments for the  party. Council Youth Director Ken Stein will once again chair this event. If you have questions, please call Ken @ 937-392-5095.
A message from Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson, about the recent events in the world today.  “The upheaval in the financial markets in  recent days has caused a great deal of concern virtually everywhere, among financial services professionals, regulators and consumers  alike. Every major financial institution has been affected by the turmoil because of the complexity of our economy, and we are no  exception. But I report to you today that there is no reason to be concerned about the value of your Knights of Columbus annuity or life  insurance. Because of our very conservative approach to investing our $14 billion in assets, the impact on the Knights of Columbus has not  been material, in other words, it has been minimal – far smaller than for many other organizations and the industry as a whole. We have  purposefully avoided investing in the highly complex and speculative investments that have brought disaster to some of America’s most  well known companies.” said Anderson.

The Knights of Columbus recently launched a brand-new Internet-based news and information service for Catholics everywhere –  Headline Bistro. The new Web site provides a quick digest of daily news of interest to Catholics. Whether it relates to world affairs, politics  or news specifically about the Catholic Church, you'll find links to the original sources here. You'll also find video clips, detailed  state-by-state information about voting and public policy, and recommended books. The Web address is www.headlinebistro.com
Our council is off to a great start with the “Following in Their Footsteps” program. Our goal is to max the program like we did last year.  The first reporting period has already come to a close. I have sent in several reports and our council has received 300 points. More  activities are planned throughout the fall months, and I will send in these reports as activities are completed.
Last year our council passed out caps the residents of the Veterans Home in Georgetown. It was a great activity, as they enjoyed receiving  a cap. The date has not been set, but we will past out caps again this year. I am shooting for a Saturday in October. More information at  our council meeting this Thursday.

The Knights of Columbus launched a new initiative at the 126th Supreme Council Meeting, called Fathers for Good. The centerpiece of  the initiative is www.fathersforgood.org. “Fatherhood is a gift, a privilege and a responsibility,” Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said.
September Birthdays are: Ken Cahall, Del Freidhoff, Harry David Germann, Bill Lawson, Drew Lawwill, Lou Martin, Rob McKinzie, Danny  Polley, Scott Thacker, Don Turner,    …….Happy Birthday Brother Knights!
